A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
