British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
